Crockett finagled the tree into its stand while Scout finished up the soup. “You’re not making it with those zoodle things, are you?” Nothing worse than vegetables pretending to be carbs.

She looked up from the stove, slightly irritated. “No. I’m using real noodles. Minus the yolks,” she mumbled.

“What was that?”

“Nothing.”

He examined the tree. Secure. Green. Good enough. He’d debated not even putting up a tree this year. He didn’t see the point. Plopping on a stool at the breakfast bar, he studied Scout as she ladled bowls of soup into huge mugs. She seemed at home in here, and he always liked watching her cook, even if it was low fat dishes. “I can get you a deal on lumber for the picnic tables and pavilions,” he blurted.

Scout grinned as she placed the mug in front of him. “I was counting on that.”

Of course she was.

“You want crackers?”

“Yes, please.”

She opened his pantry and grabbed a sleeve and placed them beside his mug.

“What will you tackle first as city manager?” she asked as she carried her dinner to the table a few feet away, but he picked up on the distance she was putting between them. He struggled to read her. One minute it seemed like she was into him and then she shoved him away. At the pine tree farm, she’d given him that look which once upon a time he’d have taken as a clear sign to kiss her but now she was across the room.

“After I go over the budget with a fine-tooth comb, I’ll look at what we need as far as personnel and new projects. I’d like to grow but keep the small-town experience.” He blew on his soup before tasting it. Rich chicken broth, awesome blend of spices, and a little bite to the carrots. “This is good.”

“Thanks. You know what I would like?”

“Noodles with the yolk?” He held up a spoonful of soup and turned his nose up, teasing her. “Can a little yolk really be that bad? I’m thirty-four and in great shape.”

“Well, your mouth could use a fair share of discipline.” She slurped broth from her spoon.

“You want to whip it into submission? I’m happy to let you give it a go.”

“Stop flirting.” She waved him off and play-frowned.

“Yes, ma’am,” he said through a grin and busied himself with his food. “What would you really like?”

She stared at him like a deer in headlights. “Oh. Nothing.”

“No, you were going to say something. Tell me.” They hadn’t had a real conversation without fussing and fighting in a long time.

Her face blanched, but she recovered quickly and lifted one shoulder as if what she was about to say wasn’t a big deal. Which meant it was.

“The eighty-acre woods on the south side of town. I wish we could either buy it or get the owners to donate it to make another park. It has a huge lake and a couple of small ponds. We could create hiking trails and clearings for picnics. Even lookout towers for wildlife observation, and campgrounds.
